CONVERIS is the leading solution for supporting the complete process of collecting, validating, and utilising research information.
Data integration
Data can be integrated in CONVERIS either manually by the users and the System Administrators, or automatically and continuously through connections to other data sources. Additionally, CONVERIS offers support tools to improve the data quality: typical typing errors, different spellings or duplicates of identical data entries are being identified and can be corrected. When data is being integrated in CONVERIS, relations are, where possible, automatically set between different types of information (publications related to persons, persons to organisations, etc.) in accordance with how the data model has been configured. In certain cases, the relations do not exist in the source data, and then need to be set manually, which can be done in the My Pages.
Customisable data model
CONVERIS data model can be configured in a completely customisable way and changed at any time. The starting point is that different pieces of information that belong to each other are grouped into a so called “Information type”. Typical Information Types are projects, publications and patents, but even persons, organisation units and thematic areas are examples on Information Types. For each Information Type, it is decided what attributes to include, what relations that should be set to other Information Types and if any relation type attributes are needed. As an example, all information that describes a project is grouped together in the Information Type “Project”. The attributes then include e.g. title, description, project type, start and end date, etc. and the relations are for example set to Information Type “Person” for the project members, Information Type “Area” for thematic categorisation, Information Type “Publication” for publications funded through the project, etc. This also means that any existing data model can be applied in whole or in part, e.g. Dublin Core, CERIF or national data models.
Flexible user management
In CONVERIS, user rights can be set in a completely flexible way at the same time as they are easy to administrate. Each user is assigned one or several user roles, where each user role defines the following:
- Which Information Types can be created / deleted, e.g. publications or projects,
- Which attributes and relations per Information Type can be edited and viewed, e.g. all attributes and relations except the attribute “Publication ID” and the relation “Publication has Citations per year”
- Which editing statuses per Information Type can be edited and viewed, e.g. only the status “Draft” and “Approved by researcher”, but not the status “Approved by Department Admin”
- Which Information Type will be used as entry point, i.e. which content the user will see upon login.
CONVERIS standard configuration, which usually is the starting point for each implementation, already includes the user roles “Researcher”, “Organisation Admin” and “System Administrator”. A user with the role “Researcher” can access all information that is connected to him/herself, whereas a user with the role “Organisation Admin” will have access to all information related to a certain organisation unit.
System Administrators have access to all content and functionality. Additionally, many other roles can be added as part of the customisation. Some examples on roles in other implementations include AreaAdmin, ContractAdmin, FinanceManager, Viewer, etc.
Individual process support
In CONVERIS, workflows and processes within the organisation can be supported in an individual way. This is done through the following:
- Each Information Type can have any number of process status levels and each level can be named in a customised way (e.g. Draft, Finalised, Published, Archived).
- For each status level it is defined which user role(s) that have edit rights.
The combination of these rules, status changes and user roles form together a flexible solution for supporting workflows and processes. As the user roles can be defined down to attribute level, and any combination of user roles can be assigned to a user, this also means that CONVERIS can take into consideration that different organisation units might have different workflows or instances for validation and quality control.
